Physical and Occupational Therapy

After a stroke, trauma, fracture, or other medical complication, your overall functional mobility may be impaired. You may experience difficulty getting in and out of bed, walking, and even performing activities of daily living such as getting washed, dressed, and other self-care functions. Our inpatient therapy team is comprised of highly qualified Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, and Occupational Therapists trained to evaluate and treat your impairments while in the hospital. The goal is to maximize your functional independence. Recommendations will be made for possible equipment, as well as collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to determine your discharge needs and options.

Outpatient physical and occupational therapy is likely the next step in the rehabilitative process, following your hospital and acute rehab stay.

Your program begins with an evaluation by a licensed physical and/or occupational therapist. We will assess your functional abilities to develop a treatment program specifically designed for you, in order to reach the goals that have been set by you and your therapist. We can offer a wide range of services to patients with many diagnoses, including neurological, orthopedic, sports medicine, post surgical, general medicine, and rheumatological conditions.

Sports medicine, comprising most of our orthopedic outpatients, includes procedures and rehabs such as ACL reconstructions, rotator cuff surgery, ankle sprains, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Additionally, back and neck pain and pain in dealing with arthritis for knees, hips, or low back are very common.

Starting Points

Your current functional status determines the starting point of treatment and from there the therapist will build on present skills. Generally, your physical therapist will be working on activities to improve your trunk control, balance, strength, and overall movement. This includes a wide range of activities. For some, it may be activities such as walking through the back yard or climbing stairs safely, while for others it might be maintaining an upright posture in a seated or standing position. Our occupational therapist focuses on upper extremity strength and flexibility as well as fine motor activities such as fastening clothing, tool use, handwriting, and other tasks of daily living.

We will work on “fine tuning” activities you have already begun to develop during your hospital or rehab stay while we start to incorporate more advanced activities you would like to resume. Working within your tolerance, we are as intensive as possible to help you take the next step in attaining your goals.

Both physical and occupational therapy are available on site in Benedictine Hospital. We also have clinics in both Saugerties and Catskill.
